Historical markers in Meade, Union and Kenton counties cover the bases about Kentuckians who made it to baseball's Big Show.
Two markers honor Hall of Famers Harold "Pee Wee" Reese (Marker 2083 in Meade County) and Jackie Robinson (Marker 1762 in Union County). Harold "Pee Wee" Reese was born in Meade County in 1918. He played for the Dodgers for 16 years (1940-42 and 1946-1958) and is often credited with making Jackie Robinson's integration into baseball easier by offering a gesture of support before the fans during a game in the late 1940s. Robinson had spent a brief time in Union County when he was in the Army, coaching and playing baseball at Camp Breckinridge. Robinson played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1947 to 1955. A statue of the two men stands in Brooklyn; their widows attended the unveiling ceremony in 2005.
Marker 2139 in Kenton County is dedicated to the Heving brothers, who played locally in Covington before making it in the big leagues in the 1920s and '30s. John was a Major League catcher; Joe, a pitcher. John played for eight seasons in the big leagues, Joe for 13 seasons. The two played together on local teams when they were in town.
