Anton Alexander von Werner (9 May 1843 – 4 January 1915) was a German painter known for his history paintings of notable political and military events in the Kingdom of Prussia. One of the most respected historical painters of his time, he is regarded a main protagonist of the Wilhelmine Period. The Franco-Prussian War (1870) in which he participated as a war painter became his crucial experience. Even 25 years later, his art was still influenced by these impressions. His paintings are reports and portraits of senior generals of a documentary value, painted in a dry and sober way.
Werner was born in Frankfurt (Oder) in the Prussian Province of Brandenburg, the son of a carpenter. His family originally came from East Prussia and was ennobled (von) in 1701.
Werner rejected all naturalist and impressionistic trends in art categorically… The ‘Uniformknopfrealismus‘ (‘uniform button realism‘) of Anton von Werner, celebrated aswell as maligned in public, is mainly connected with his most important painting, the ‘Proclamation of the Kaiser at Versailles‘. Apart from intensively working on uniform and traditional costume studies, he took up a teaching career. Since 1875 he had been the director of the Royal Academic College of the Plastic Arts at Berlin, he was the director of a master studio and for many years the president of the Berlin Artists‘ Association.
