No one will ever know what is going through her mind: the “Seated Girl” inside Rome’s Centrale Montemartini has her legs crossed, one arm supporting her and the other languidly folded over her chest… we wonder what a kinesics expert might make out of her pensive pose.
The statue dates back to the 2nd century and was found in 1879 near the Temple of Minerva Medica, in Rome’s Esquiline ‘rione’. It is likely a Roman copy of a sculpture made by students of Lysippos, probably around the end of the 4th century BC.
Lysippos and his brother Lysistratus went down in history as the first sculptors to make individual portraits, and to abandon the ideal, traditional canons followed until then, in favor of the psychological nuances of each subject.
Yet this girl’s thoughts remain a mystery, allowing us to see our own reflected in her.
